Kathiku: Bottling Botswana’s Magic This Festive Season

Handcrafted and topnotch, Kathiku captures the magic of life’s finest moments – one sip at a time

GOSEGO MOTSUMI

This festive season, Kathiku Beverages has positioned itself as the drink of choice for Batswana and tourists alike. The brand recently launched its Itse (Know) Kathiku Drive-Thru Pop-Up Tasting series at Protea Masa Hotel in Gaborone, offering attendees a taste of their handcrafted gins and vodka.

This event marked the beginning of a countrywide initiative aimed at introducing Kathiku to the local market.

The name “Kathiku” is derived from the HaMbukushu language, meaning the “Magic Hour Before Sunset” and symbolises the brand’s commitment to creating memorable moments. Owned by retired fashion designer and entrepreneur Ineeleng Kavindama, Kathiku represents a bold pivot from fashion to the world of premium beverages.

Founder’s roots

Kavindama’s inspiration stemmed from her Okavango roots and her desire to diversify income streams in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kathiku’s flagship range, the Big 5 Collection, is inspired by the iconic animals of the Okavango region. Each flavour represents an animal. This unique branding not only reflects the beauty of Botswana’s wilderness but also positions Kathiku as a premium, artisanal product.

Expanding horizons

With plans to target the tourism sector, Kathiku aims to capture the attention of visitors to the Okavango Delta seeking authentic local experiences. “We don’t compromise on quality,” Kavindama emphasised in an interview. “Our products are handcrafted, not mass-produced; ensuring they are premium and topnotch.”

Kathiku’s products are currently bottled in South Africa to manage costs. However, Kavindama envisions relocating production to Botswana to boost local employment and solidify the brand’s presence in the market.

Acknowledging the competitive nature of the beverages industry, Kavindama views competition as an opportunity to learn and grow. “Competition keeps us on our toes,” she said, determined to carve a niche for Kathiku as a uniquely Botswana offering.

What’s next for Kathiku?

Following the success of the Gaborone tasting, the Itse Kathiku Drive-Thru Pop-Up Tasting series will travel to Francistown, Letlhakane, Kasane, Maun and Orapa on dates to be announced in due course. Additional activations and parties are planned to sustain the brand’s momentum and reach a wider audience.

Kathiku is more than just a beverage brand, it’s a celebration of Botswana’s culture, heritage and entrepreneurial spirit. As Kavindama aptly put it, Kathiku captures the magic of life’s finest moments – one sip at a time.
