- Africa’s Jewel set to release a new album end of October
GOSEGO MOTSUMI
Jazz icon Nnunu Ramogotsi-Neill, fondly known as Africa’s Jewel, showcased Botswana’s musical talent on a global stage at the country’s Independence celebrations in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the sole artist invited from Botswana, and her powerful performance on October 3, 2024, left a lasting impression on the distinguished audience, which included Ambassador Athalia Molokomme, Botswana’s Ambassador to Belgium Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, and other high-profile dignitaries.
A show-stopping performance
Ramogotsi-Neill’s invitation to perform at this prestigious event was significant, marking the final year of Ambassador Athalia Molokomme’s tenure. Determined to go out in style, Molokomme enlisted the jazz songbird to elevate the celebrations. “I delivered, and the masses were impressed,” Ramogotsi-Neill said in an interview, reflecting on the electrifying reception she received.
Her performance was not just a highlight of the night but a cultural testament to Botswana’s vibrant musical heritage. Sponsored by Botash, she confirmed that her performance was generously compensated, unlike some cultural exchange shows.
A star in high demand
Following her stellar performance in Geneva, Ramogotsi-Neill revealed that she’s already receiving proposals to return to Switzerland, with additional bookings from other European cities and a Nigerian fashion event. The event was more than a celebration of Botswana’s Independence—it was a gateway for the “Role la Tsie” hitmaker to expand her international musical reach.
Ramogotsi-Neill is also hard at work on her upcoming album, which is set to be released at the end of October. Fans can expect the same enchanting sounds that have earned her the title of Africa’s Jewel.
A harmonious duo
Ramogotsi-Neill’s Swiss sojourn didn’t end on October 3rd. On October 6th, she performed at a cultural night alongside Motswana opera singer Angela Kerrison, who is based in Switzerland. Their collaboration perfectly blended Botswana’s rich cultural diversity with global musical influences, creating a performance that resonated deeply with attendees, including Batswana from Belgium, Germany, and Sweden.
As Botswana’s music and culture continue to make waves across international borders, Nnunu’s powerful performances are a reminder of the talent the country has to offer.
