Robertsons Spices, in partnership with renowned Chef Kabo Olesitse, is taking its mission to celebrate local culinary culture to new heights. They are in the northern part of Botswana this week, aiming to uplift and recognise street food vendors in Mahalapye, Palapye, Serowe and Francistown.
The initiative follows the successful recognition of vendors in Gaborone and Kanye where the duo unearthed bold, authentic flavours that characterise Botswana’s rich street food scene. Their journey is not only a testament to Robertsons’ commitment to honouring the support of Batswana over the years but also a celebration of the country’s diverse food culture.
Uncovering bold flavours
Chef Kabo has made it his mission to traverse Botswana, seeking out hidden gems in the local street food sector. “I typically visit street vendors across Botswana, sampling their delicious dishes, sharing their unique stories, and rewarding them, courtesy of Robertsons spices,” he shared with Time Out.
From the much-anticipated braai chicken vendor in Serowe to the innovative waffle vendor in Palapye, Chef Kabo is eager to showcase how these street vendors elevate their offerings using the rich flavours of Robertsons.
A journey of taste and tradition
The journey of Robertsons and Chef Kabo began at the widely acclaimed quesadilla spot at Block 9 in Gaborone. There they discovered quesadillas bursting with savoury flavours, a hallmark of the unique blend that Robertsons spices provide. They then extended their exploration to culinary hotspots like Katlego Ramphaleng’s Mmantlo Goodies, the iconic Mosi oa Thunya street food zone on Old Lobatse Road, and VM Food in Gaborone Central Business District. These stops have highlighted the vibrant street food scene where vendors infuse their dishes with a touch of Robertsons magic.
Championing culinary stories
Chef Kabo’s role goes beyond tasting – he is an ambassador for celebrating the diverse stories behind each dish. “Some of the street vendors are highly recommended by foodies and they never disappoint,” he noted.
He views this journey as more than just a professional pursuit; it is a heartfelt endeavour. “So far, this journey has been personally fulfilling as it represents what I truly stand for celebrating culinary culture and giving back,” Chef Kabo added.
For over a century, Robertsons has been a staple in Botswana kitchens, earning a reputation for consistent quality and an innate understanding of local culinary preferences. Its seasonal campaigns, like this street food adventure, are designed to strengthen the brand’s connection with Batswana.
A legacy of trust and taste
By focusing on enriching traditional Botswana cuisine, Robertsons ensures that its legacy remains as strong as ever. With each new region they visit, Robertsons and Chef Kabo are not just hunting for the best street food but are also nurturing a deeper bond with the people who have made the brand a household name.
As Robertsons and Chef Kabo continue their flavourful journey through the northern part of Botswana, they remain committed to elevating street vendors, sharing their stories, and celebrating the incredible diversity of Botswana’s street food culture.
