GU had previously been unbeaten for 19 years in a local cup final
Gaborone United are widely regarded as one of the cup kings in local football due to their rich history in domestic cup competitions, they are the joint most successful club in the land with eight (8) knock-out competition trophies. In their trophy tally, the Coca Cola Cup accounts for six trophies in their cabinet while the other two are rounded off by Mascom Top 8 triumphs of 2013 and 2015.
Prior to their Mascom Top 8 final defeat against Jwaneng Galaxy, they had the country’s longest unbeaten spell in a major cup final. GU had previously not tasted defeat in a major cup final since 2000, whereby they were beaten by a Major David Bright led Mogoditshane Fighters 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Since then, GU had won the Coca Cola Cup in 2012, the Mascom Top 8 in 2013 and 2015 as stated above. Miguel Da Costa’s charges ended GU’s 19 year undefeated spell in a local cup final after beating Moyagoleele 2-0 this past weekend.
Galaxy gradually growing as a force in local football.
Although they have less than a decade in local football (having been formed after a merger in 2014), Galaxy have proved to be a thorn in the flesh of the country’s elite clubs. They made their league debut in the 2015/2016 season but they have already managed to be a mainstay in the title race every season.
The Jwaneng side has already amassed two trophies in five years of existence, which is more than what most clubs have won in the last decade. Their latest Mascom Top 8 triumph has made them the joint most successful club in the history of the competition, it is a record they share with GU and Township Rollers.
Galaxy are still in the race for the 2018/2019 BTC Premiership title and they will be hopeful of closing a four point gap between themselves and Rollers with only eight games left in the season.
