Botswana’s sprinting sensation, Letsile Tebogo, is now a Global Ambassador for De Beers, the renowned diamond company.
Tebogo, who made history by winning a 200-metre gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was named the World Athletics Male Athlete of the Year, is excited about the partnership.
“I’m humbled that an organisation like De Beers, which has played such a pivotal role in the development of my country, sees it fit to play a role in my future too,” said Botswana top athlete in a statement.
Intertwined
His success, he believes, is intertwined with Botswana’s rich diamond heritage. “The very resources that built our schools and sports facilities have paved the way for young athletes like me,” he noted.
The announcement of the collaboration, which marks a significant milestone for both Tebogo and the diamond industry, was made in Gaborone last week.
Beyond sports
“This partnership goes beyond sports,” Tebogo noted. “It’s about showcasing the natural resources driving positive change in our communities and creating pathways for the next generation of Batswana champions.”
Speaking at a special event held at De Beers’ headquarters, the company’s Executive Vice President of the Diamond Trading Company, Paul Rowley, said the collaboration will emphasise Botswana’s diamond story.
“We are committed to unlocking the potential of Botswana’s talent by leveraging its natural resources,” Rowley remarked.
Shared values
Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Otsile Mabeo, opened the event, noting that the partnership with Tebogo celebrated shared values, particularly the importance of hard work and community.
She likened Tebogo’s athletic journey to the transformation of rough diamonds into brilliant stones.
The day’s proceedings also included a tour of the diamond display office where Tebogo, along with his coach, Kebonyemodisa Dose Mosimanyane, and other distinguished guests, had the chance to view Botswana’s diamonds up close.
The partnership signifies more than a typical endorsement deal. It’s a collaboration that celebrates the power of community and the transformative potential of both diamonds and athletes.
