The government has handed over new residential homes to Botswana’s Olympic champions who did well in the Paris 2024 Games earlier this year.
The handing over ceremony, which was held in Gaborone recently, symbolised not only a celebration of individual achievements but also a commitment to fostering a culture of sports excellence in Botswana.
“It is both an honour and a privilege to stand before you today at this significant occasion,” said the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development, Tumiso Rakgare.
Top corporate sponsors
“Today we gather not just to celebrate individual achievements but to also recognise the spirit of resilience, dedication and excellence that embodies the essence of Botswana.”
Addressing an audience that included prominent figures such as the president of Botswana National Olympic Committee, Colonel Botsang Tshenyego, the Chairperson of Botswana National Sports Commission Marumo Morule, as well as top corporate sponsors, Minister Rakgare lauded the dedication of the athletes who represented Botswana on the global stage.
“Your hard work, perseverance, and commitment to excellence have not only made you champions but have also made us all immensely proud,” he said.
A historic moment
The ceremony, a historic moment in Botswana’s sports landscape, underscored the government’s growing investment in sports as part of a broader vision to advance the country’s development.
According to Rakgare, the initiative aligns Botswana with international standards for supporting and incentivising sports excellence.
“The government believes that investing in our athletes is investing in our national identity, pride and Botho,” he noted.
Beyond the celebratory spirit of the ceremony, the minister urged the athletes to use their success to inspire the next generation.
Matlhagola-Tsela
“As you take possession of these homes, I urge you to view them not only as a reward for your hard work but also as a foundation for your future endeavours,”he said. “Share your stories, mentor young talents, and engage with your communities.”
The ceremony also served as an opportunity for the minister to introduce new developments in Botswana’s sports education.
Highlighting the recently launched Matlhagola-Tsela initiative that aims to foster youth engagement in sports from an early age, he stated: “It is essential that we build strong infrastructure that not only supports elite athletes but also engages youth at all levels.”
Constant reminder
Rakgare concluded with words of admiration for the athletes and the lasting impact of their achievements on Botswana’s national identity.
“May these homes serve as a constant reminder of your incredible achievements and the support of your nation,” he said, adding that Botswana’s sporting future looks bright with its champions poised to continue excelling in global events.
