Royal Encounter Returns Under Lights

Chiefs carry a four match unbeaten league run against Rollers into Saturday’s Royal Encounter, with pride and early season momentum at stake.

BONGANI MALUNGA

One of Botswana football’s heavyweight rivalries returns to centre stage on Saturday night when Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Township Rollers collide in the eagerly anticipated Royal Encounter at the National Stadium in Gaborone. The October 10 showdown, scheduled for a 7pm kick off, brings together two of the country’s most decorated clubs with more than three FNB Premiership points at stake, as pride, bragging rights and momentum go on the line.

CHIEFS’ EDGE

Recent league history tilts heavily towards Magosi. Since Chiefs returned to the top flight for the 2024/25 season, Rollers have failed to beat them in four FNB Premiership meetings, beginning with a goalless draw on January 4, 2025 before Chiefs won the reverse fixture 2-0 on April 13.

Chiefs tightened their grip on the rivalry last season, beating Rollers 2-1 on October 25, 2025 before completing the league double with another 2-0 victory on March 14 this year. That gives Chiefs three wins and a draw from the last four league meetings, with six goals scored and only one conceded.

NEEDING MOMENTUM

The two giants enter the encounter needing momentum for different reasons. Chiefs have collected four points from their opening four assignments after a 1-0 defeat to Extension Gunners, a 2-0 victory over Nico United, a 1-1 draw against Tonota FC and a 2-0 defeat to TAFIC on October 3.

Rollers, meanwhile, have four points from only two completed league fixtures. They drew 1-1 with Morupule Wanderers before producing their strongest performance of the campaign with a 3-0 victory over Extension Gunners, while their opening fixture against Jwaneng Galaxy was abandoned and the scheduled meeting with Orapa United was postponed.

ROLLERS REBUILD

Popa’s campaign has unfolded against a turbulent backdrop, but the victory over Gunners offered encouraging signs that their rebuilding project is beginning to gather momentum. Chiefs will be looking to disrupt that progress while extending their recent hold over the fixture.

KGASWANE FACTOR

Adding another layer to Saturday’s contest is Chiefs winger Mpho Kgaswane, a player who has developed a habit of hurting Rollers. During his spell at Gaborone United, Kgaswane scored six goals against Popa from 2023 onwards and now has an opportunity to renew acquaintances with them in black and white.

Despite that record, Kgaswane expects another bruising contest. “It won’t be an easy game because Rollers is still a big club despite what they are currently going through. The game has historically been a huge occasion and this fixture will continue to be a big draw,” Kgaswane told Gazette Sport.

On his knack for producing against Rollers, he played down the individual significance. “The big games always bring out an extra level of motivation for every player. During my time at GU the derby against Rollers was a huge moment and it required all of us to be at our best.”

BOUNCE BACK

Kgaswane believes the Royal Encounter presents an immediate opportunity to erase the disappointment of the TAFIC defeat and breathe life into Chiefs’ campaign. “Sometimes it’s good to go into a game with low expectations because at the moment everyone thinks Chiefs is dead. One good result can turn into a winning streak. Everyone at the club is still hurting by what happened against TAFIC but we are focused on the next game against Rollers,” he said.
